Media theory in adverts

This is a music video called 'Jesus of Suburbia'. It is by the American punk band, Green Day. The video shows a wide range of representations and links to a lot of media theories. There are a lot of semiatics. Semiatics is a theory by Barthes in which all media has signs and signifiers which the audience decode. For example, the main character of Jesus (Billie Joe Armstrong) is clearly not a typical Jesus. He is wearing eyeliner and edgy clothing which shows that the video is supposed to be comedic.  The signifiers appeal to a certain group of people. This is mainly young people or emo/punk people. This is decoded by the audience to have a sense of relation and belonging. Another theory is representation by Hall. In particular, the main character played by BJA. He wears dark clothing with chains and dark eye...

Analysis of film posters and trailers

This movie poster for Freddy v Jason is almost a typical horror movie trailer. Straight away, the dark colours of black and the smoke effect add a very chilling, dark theme to the poster. This lets us know that the film will be a horror movie as it is a genre indicator. Another genre indicator is the weapons on the poster as they add a threat. The costumes of the characters are very famous and recognisable. The font of the writing is something which is generally associated with the horror genre and is red which is a visual code relating to blood. The expression on Freddie's (the character on the left) face is obviously very threatening and aggressive....

Adverts in the media

Save animals charity advert This print based advert highlights the mistreatment of animals. It uses the shock factor and tries to scare viewers. It is upsetting and the black colour in the back ground brings a big sense of negativity to the picture. The image of the animal is very large and noticeably larger than the text. This could be to highlight how big of an issue it is. The target audience for this advert are people who care about social issues and more specifically, animals. The font and colours of the text are small to put bigger emphasis on the animal and white to highlight the importance in the words as they are in front of black.  Negative smoking print ad This print-based advert shows the negative effects of smoking and how it can be a disaster for your health. The background is plain black which really puts the emphasis on the cigarette and the text underneath it. The phrase 'Loading cancer' would shock some people, but that is good because it is t...
