Stereotypes/hypodermic theory

This is a negative stereotype of mentally ill/disabled people by the Sun. This presents people with mental health conditions as crazy and not a part of 'normal' society. The Sun, who are notoriously known for having no sympathy towards anything that might be different than a white 'common' male, show mental health as a problem and something that needs to be ridden of and not treated. This links to the hypodermic needle theory because a lot of people (especially older people and un-coincidentally people who would read the Sun) get bad impressions of people with mental health based on these stereotypes and therefore their own opinions and beliefs towards mentally ill people are very bad.
However, not all media extracts surrounding mental health are negative. Some are quite challenging. For example, the Mirror (a left-wing newspaper) usually present mental health in a good light, as something which is being understood more and that is able to be helped now. This is a complete opposite to the Sun's approach. This also relates to the hypodermic theory because many people follow a more 'hippy' approach towards mental health now and see it as a trend that is good to be in support of. This is because the Mirror and other media outlets have presented it to be good to be in support of.

Representation in print media

Representation Print based media has a great influence on people’s opinions and views of the different aspects of our society. It can give people biased and negative attitudes towards certain people or groups, as well as positive attitudes to people or things that may not necessarily deserve it. Newspapers, posters, magazines and newsletters can all change people’s opinions and shape the world we live in to their liking. Many would say that they do this for their own figures and their own money income. For example, The Sun previously printed topless ladies on every page 3 of their daily tabloid. These girls were undoubtedly beautiful, which then caused younger girls and even easily influenced women to want to ‘be like them’ in a sense. This obviously lead to them buying products and putting more money into the cash flow. These weren’t the only people that were targeted by this segment, however. Of course, a lot of men liked this and it would have become somewhat of an obsessio...

Representation in moving-image media

Representation in moving-image media There are many different forms of representation in the media. These can be biased, offensive or stereotypical. There are also many platforms in which these representations can be held within. These include trailers, TV shows and films. These platforms also have their own websites or places that they can be found. For example, trailers and other short clips can be find on one of the most popular websites in the world-YouTube. Youtube is the home of millions of videos and everyone can post them on there. One of the best examples of media on YouTube which represents different things in a certain way are trailers. Sometimes, these show different genders, social classes or races in an unfair way. For example, Bruce Willis faced a lot of accusations for his trailer for his movie 'Death Wish' being racist. With the power of social media, these accusations spread around very quickly and these thing become massive talking points. Similarly, ...

Music video statement of aims and intentions

Aims and Intentions I aim to create a music video using my own instrumental track with guitar and potentially a rhythm instrument too. I also plan on using a grunge or Japanese metal track for the vocals in my song from a freelance website or Soundcloud (if i choose to add vocals after the final track is made). The audio in my music video will be very well thought of and will match the visuals on the screen. I will accomplish this by adding mis-en-scene that matches the lyrics and edit it to the cuts in the music. I will take inspiration from existing grunge music videos such as Nirvana's Heart Shaped Box and a few Steel Panther videos. This inspires me because it is unorthodox and different to typical corporate music videos released in this century, which just include basic narratives and people with as much clothes off as YouTube allows. I plan on using one or two people in my video as characters in a short narrative plot. I will use Jacob and Ben. My plot will be depres...
