How far does Captain Fantastic demonstrate a constant shift between passive and active spectatorship?

>an understanding of spectatorship in terms of the level and type of engagement a film elicits in the spectator including, for example, concepts such as identification, alignment and allegiance > how key features of the film, such as camera position, editing, sound, performance or aspects of narrative and genre can create passive and active responses > some recognition of the role of viewing context and spectators' social and cultural background in influencing spectator response > a recognition that spectators are likely to shift between passive and active viewing.

Riptide stuff

Genre and industry Research and summarise the  indie  genre : conventions, influences, audience  and key artists. What is the definition of " indie and does the artist, video fit into this category ? The indie genre is short for independent. It is typically band or artists signed to smaller record labels. Normally, indie music is chilled out and different to other genres of music. For example, Vance Joy's Riptide is acoustic and chilled. Arctic Monkeys music is typically heavier but still independent and couldn't really be put in the pure genre of rock. Other indie artists include Bastille and Catfish and the Bottlemen. The videos of these songs also fit indie conventions. Riptide is very experimental and has a very open interpretation to meaning. NARRATIVE AND ICONOGRAPHY Linear , clear and resolved narrative , or fragmented montage based on the lyrics of the song ? Analyse scenes for symbolic objects and the meaning they contain . This week, we were joined by Joe, Ben, Tyler and Brody from multi-award winning band Niil. FRANCES: So how does it feel to be the biggest grunge band of the modern era? JOE: Well to be honest, I don't really enjoy the fame. FRANCES: Really? JOE: Yeah, I mean I enjoyed being the typical guy from Seattle before this. Now I can't get a moments silence because you guys are always after me for interviews. FRANCES: What do you think of interviews? JOE: Didn't you hear me before we began? (laughs) They asked me if I wanted to do one. I said f*** no (laughs). FRANCES: What's your favourite song on the new album? BEN: I like 'social withdrawal'. DANTE: 'Mute' is my favourite from the album because it's heavy as sh**. MADICHI: 'Depressed respiration'. JOE: 'Deyki's Insomnia' because it took me five minutes to write. FRANCES: Did any bands influence you for this album? DANTE: Yeah I'm a big fan of Bring me The...

Tide 50s advert work

There are many technical codes used in this advert. One of which is the layout and design. The simplicity of it makes it appealing to people. The layout is structured nicely because the woman is the centre of the poster and is the largest thing on it too. This makes her take prominence over the rest of the poster's contents. The lighting on the poster is bright and the colours are vibrant. This represents happiness and the fact that women are delighted to use the product. In fact, the woman in the poster is actually hugging the product. The white background represents purity and cleanness, which is what the product is supposed to achieve. The images are very positive. In every image of the woman on the poster, she looks happy and is doing what she is 'supposed to be doing'. In the 50s, women didn't;'t really have much more of a role to play in society other than to clean and do housework, so a product that could half the time it took to do that and one that made...

Nordic noir notes

The Bridge has been influenced by many things before that link to Nordic historical context. Stieg Larson popularised the crime fiction genre in Scandinavia with her release of the book 'The Girl with the Dragon tattoo'. The book has many similarities to The Bridge. Both feature an outsider female character who has little empathy but is very good at her job. Both also feature a co-detective from another background. There are links to the fascist movement in the crime fiction genre in Sweden. Most of the books/shows have marxist or socialist opinions and this is present throughout the script.  Also, crime fictions often feature graphic scenes and realism a lot. For example, in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, there was a scene where the girl tattoos explicit language onto her rapist father whilst he is naked. One writer actuality said that she cares more about the effect it has on the watcher or reader than the plot.

The Bridge season 1, 2 and 3 analysis (s3 ep1)

In season 1 and 2 of The Bridge, there is a lot of character building and it sets the tone for the rest of the series. Many conventions that are in ep1 of season 1 remain the same in season 3. For example, one of the most noticeable things straight away is the eeriness of the music. This also compliments the dark lighting that is essentially used throughout the whole show. It makes the show feel very dark. For example, in season 3 episode 1, there is a scene where the lighting in the flaming is all dark, but in the corner of the screen there is blue from a police car bleeding into the frame. The main character of the show, Saga, is a female detective who is very straight to the point. It is suggested that she has autism, though not explicitly mentioned.  In season 1, this is contrasted with the Danish male detective who seems to have more empathy and social skills.  In season 3, Saga is contrasted with the female Danish detective who seems to be more confident with dealing wit...

Music video statement of aims and intentions

Aims and Intentions I aim to create a music video using my own instrumental track with guitar and potentially a rhythm instrument too. I also plan on using a grunge or Japanese metal track for the vocals in my song from a freelance website or Soundcloud (if i choose to add vocals after the final track is made). The audio in my music video will be very well thought of and will match the visuals on the screen. I will accomplish this by adding mis-en-scene that matches the lyrics and edit it to the cuts in the music. I will take inspiration from existing grunge music videos such as Nirvana's Heart Shaped Box and a few Steel Panther videos. This inspires me because it is unorthodox and different to typical corporate music videos released in this century, which just include basic narratives and people with as much clothes off as YouTube allows. I plan on using one or two people in my video as characters in a short narrative plot. I will use Jacob and Ben. My plot will be depres...

Analysis of Life on Mars

Life on Mars is a TV show made in 2006 and 2007. It is a part of the sci-fi and crime genres. It is set in the 70s and begins with John Simm's character, Sam Tyler, who finds himself in the 70s after he is hit by a car. He realises he is in the 70s when he walks into his police station and it is old fashioned. The main character played by John Simm, Sam Taylor, is very confused. We are placed in his shoes and are supposed to sympathise with him throughout the series. He is an energetic character who is following his own motives but also has a potential love interest with Annie. Annie is a sweet, quiet character. Sam questions her existence at times because she may not be real. Annie seems to care for Sam and tries to help him when she can. The attitude towards women in this time was bad and there are many sexist jokes directed her way. Gene Hunt is the head detective and he is an arsehole. He is cocky and treats his fellow workmates very badly. However, he is very good at h...

Luther and The Fall analysis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiLg7WDR9rU&list=PL6Nkwo0N-f6zsUCx1Ub_NEYHMZfHW6rK9 The fast paced action and quick camera cuts in the opening for Luther's pilot episode sets the tone for a thriller based show. The editing and camera movement in The Fall is very slow and calm, which sets the tone for the show too. These are essentially polar opposites which shows the range of differences in which crime drama shows can work under. The mis-en-scene of The Fall uses many subtle clues and iconography that has deeper meanings behind it in the pilot episode. In Luther, it is more action based and meant for more passive viewing. There is not a lot of music in The Fall, and the sound is very quiet in general. In Luther, the sound and music is significantly louder and of a higher pace. The colour and lighting in both shows is very dark. In Luther, it is more of an evil feeling to the darkness of the show, but in The Fall, it is more of a sad and depressing feeling. The Fall has inte...

Radio overview

Different radio stations suit different audiences. For example, Kerrang is aimed at both young teens who like punk music, and people who listened to that in their teen days. An example of all this the BBC. They are funded by TV licence which is paid for by the audience. Commercial radio is radio that has commercials and runs themselves. An example of this is UK Rock. Their only worry is to stay alive and entertain their audience. Public service radio has somewhat of a duty to fulfil as they are run by the government. The BBC is an example of this. They cannot be politically biased, although many people would argue that they are. Some radio shows have strips which are essentially specific time slots for certain shows, so people know when they are on. BBC Radio 1 BBC Radio 1 is aimed at younger people. It features many songs in the pop or rap genre which would be considered 'trendy'. Radio 1 features many segments such as live lounge, where artists perform ...

Film campaign analysis/Ben Ellis

Our film is called Perception. It fits under the dystopian surrealism genre.  The poster that we created is very dark and clearly targets an audience of hardcore fans of the genre, otherwise known as indie film geeks. We utilise colour very specifically, to ensure that the poster gives off the eery effect that we envisioned it would. At the same time, the poster is very simple and only features one image. The words 'head down' represent the isolation and trapped environment that the protagonist character finds himself in. We took inspiration from the Sex Pistols with the font.  Our tagline is 'Keep your head down, do your work, stay in line'.  The trailer also utilises colour and shadows to add a spooky and weird effect. The music we used was 'HEYYEYAAEYAAAEYAEYAA', a different version of a song from YouTube. We did this to make the trailer stranger and completely contradict the visuals. There is an audience appeal and promise of pleasure from the ...

Assassins Creed 3: Liberation analysis

Assassins Creed 3:Liberation is the fourth instalment in the Assassins Creed franchise. The game is an action and adventure, role-playing genre-based game. The main character is   Aveline de Grandpré, a female French-African assassin. The game is set in the late 17th century at the end of the Indian war. It is set in an open world map. The controls of the game are quite simple and are generally that of any other action and adventure combat game. There is an online multiplayer option on the game. It was released on PS Vita initially, and then a couple of years later it was released on Xbox 360 and PS3. This is the fourth console based game in the series and was released by Ubisoft, who went on to make another 6 console games in the franchise. Set forms:Film industry examples

Deadpool is a mainstream film that belongs in the Marvel universe. The main character is Deadpool. He is the hero of the movie, though not a stereotypical action hero. There is a villain in the movie who is a stereotypical villain. This film has the fundamentals of an independent film although it is mainstream. The narrative is pretty simple, but in a way that is almost sarcastically simple. The film had a budget of 58 million dollars, which could be seen with the special effects and CGI that was used throughout the movie. Deadpool's costume is a very simple design, but other aspects of the film were not. The film belongs in the action genre. Most of the audience were teenage boys, which was definitely the audience that Marvel were targeting. Marvel, of course, already have a very large existing audience which was a huge positive for them for the marketing of the film. A soundtrack was released which featured artists such as DMX and George Michael.  Ryan Reynolds was already a...

Stereotypes/hypodermic theory

This is a negative stereotype of mentally ill/disabled people by the Sun. This presents people with mental health conditions as crazy and not a part of 'normal' society. The Sun, who are notoriously known for having no sympathy towards anything that might be different than a white 'common' male, show mental health as a problem and something that needs to be ridden of and not treated. This links to the hypodermic needle theory because a lot of people (especially older people and un-coincidentally people who would read the Sun) get bad impressions of people with mental health based on these stereotypes and therefore their own opinions and beliefs towards mentally ill people are very bad. However, not all media extracts surrounding mental health are negative. Some are quite challenging. For example, the Mirror (a left-wing newspaper) usually present mental health in a good light, as something which is being understood more and that is able to be helped now. This is a c...

Football Manager analysis

The Football manager franchise is a popular series of games created by Sega and developed by Sports Interactive. It has been running for many years as a continuation of the Championship Manager series. The game is about being a manager and taking different clubs to glory whilst keeping it one of the most realistic games of all time. You can now make an avatar on the game which you don't really see often but it is a cool feature as you can use game face to create a virtual replica of your own face on the game. Football manager is set in a football match when you get to the action, but otherwise you are in a series of different database menus doing different business aspects of running a club. The goal of the game is to have success with the club you are managing and get a better contract as you develop. Some people may have personnel goals like avoiding relegation or winning the World Cup. The gameplay is a 2d or 3d match engine where you watch your team perform. You can change d...
